Why image manipulation is unethical

Throughout history pictures have been manipulated to make the audience believe a false narrative. Even before the digital age, images have been distorted that trick the viewer. Many of the photoshopped images are created by media members that are intended to make the audience believe in a certain way. These media corporations are going against the very purpose of their existence, which is to inform the public about events in a fair and honest way. The intent behind the manipulation is to convey a false narrative about a topic in order to sway the viewer one way or another.
This, by my standards, is unethical because the intent of the manipulator is to misinform the viewer into believing a false narrative.
